One of the best things about the holiday season is the food. Thanksgiving and Christmas bring with them a cornucopia of delicious, traditional foods and food traditions. In Sarah and I’s family, some of these foods and traditions include ham loaf, prime rib, and visiting Fort Wayne’s famous Coney Island at least once with our families. However, sometimes with all of these traditions, it just becomes necessary to mix things up a bit and try new things with traditional ingredients. So I decided to try a couple of new things this year. This first recipe is what happens when you take my love for all things pumpkin and mix it together with my love of all things BBQ. That’s right, we’re talking about Pumpkin BBQ sauce!

I will admit that I was a bit skeptical when I thought about it the first time. But once I got the proportions right– the first attempt had way too much pumpkin pie spice– it was actually quite good and compliments pork very well. So here you go:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup light molasses
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin (canned is fine)
  • 1 T brown sugar
  • 1 T Worcestershire
  • 1 t black pepper
  • 1/2 t pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 T liquid smoke
  • 1 T lemon juice

Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat. I tend to keep it on the heat for half an hour or so in order to make sure all the flavors are incorporated well.
