Looking for a homemade gift idea that doesn’t ruin the diet or the break the bank?

Every holiday, we are bombarded with images and advertisements enticing us to spend, buy and give. Is it just me, or does it get crazier every year? The race to find the right expression of our gratitude for every person who touches our lives begins before the Thanksgiving to-furkey is digested, creating stress where there should only be joy.

Before you shop this holiday season, consider how much waste is produced with traditional gift giving. Wrapping paper, gift bags and colorful bows adorn gifts packaged in plastic and placed in boxes. And when it’s time to write our New Year’s Resolutions, most of the trinkets that we exchange become trash as we set goals to trim the fat and cut the clutter.

I’ve worked hard to reduce the amount of trash that our family sends to the landfill. And though recycling has been a big part of that, I’ve discovered the easiest way to make a difference is avoid disposables, and buy what I need in bulk. Of course, there is no way to avoid it all, but when you start looking at the big picture, you realize the little things matter. A homemade gift is a great alternative that won’t go to waste. Seriously, it’s the thought that counts.
