Monosodium glutamate (MSG)

Monosodium Glutamate or MSG is a flavor enhancing additive that is used for balancing and blending flavors. As an industrial produced food additive, MSG is considered safe for human consumption by the United States Food and Drug Administration. However, some people can suffer allergic reactions after consuming MSG or products that contain MSG. Symptoms of reactions to MSG are typically short-term and include headache, chest pain, rash, and diarrhea. Preventing the reactions by avoiding MSG can be difficult due to the extensive amount of products that contain it. Soups, processed chicken, sweet and salty snacks, and lunch meats are all goods that contain significant amounts of MSG.
